Gir Kesar Mangoes: The “Queen of Mangoes”

The Kesar mango from the Gir region of Gujarat, particularly around the Gir Somnath district, is world-renowned for its exquisite flavor, aroma, and vibrant color. Often called the “Queen of Mangoes,” it holds a Geographical Indication (GI) tag, ensuring its authenticity and unique regional characteristics.

Key Characteristics

  • Taste & Texture: Kesar mangoes are celebrated for their incredibly sweet, rich, and honey-like pulp. The texture is non-fibrous, buttery, and smooth, making it a favorite for both eating fresh and culinary preparations.
  • Appearance: They are medium-sized, roundish in shape, and possess a distinct saffron-colored (kesar) flesh, which is how they earned their name. The skin is usually greenish-yellow with a slight blush.
  • Season: The Kesar season is relatively short, typically spanning from mid-April to early June. The peak of the harvest usually occurs in May.

Varieties and Cultivation

While “Gir Kesar” is the primary variety, cultivation is strictly concentrated in the Gir region. The unique microclimate, characterized by the volcanic soil of the Gir hills and the humid, breezy air from the Arabian Sea, creates the perfect environment for the fruit to develop its intense sweetness and flavor.

Exports and Economy

  • Global Reach: Due to its superior shelf life and premium quality, Gir Kesar is a major export commodity. It is highly sought after in international markets, particularly in the Middle East, Europe, and North America, catering to the diaspora and connoisseurs of exotic fruits.
  • Economic Impact: The mango industry is a backbone of the local economy in Gir Somnath. Thousands of farmers rely on the harvest, which is often sold through regulated APMC (Agricultural Produce Market Committee) markets, particularly the Talala APMC, which is known as one of the largest mango trading hubs in the region.
