Category Historic

The Sana Caves, located near Vankiya in the Gir Somnath district, are a fascinating complex of 62 ancient rock-cut caves. Carved out by Buddhist monks between the 1st century BC and the 1st century AD, these caves are considered the oldest Buddhist caves in Western India. The site features a variety of architectural elements, including stupas, chaityas (prayer halls), viharas (monasteries), and water tanks, all carved into the soft rock of a scenic hill. Unlike many other ornate cave complexes, the Sana Caves are known for their austere, simplistic design. They offer a peaceful retreat for history enthusiasts, trekkers, and nature lovers, providing panoramic views of the surrounding landscapes
