Somnath is steeped in history and has been the site of multiple temples which have been razed and rebuilt many times. Somnath temple has a rich architecture. The city symbolizes the birth of the new nation as it was proposed to be built immediately after India achieved independence, and as overseen by the Iron man of India, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel with the blessings of Mahatma Gandhi. The relevance of Somnath as one of the most important religious shrines and general Indian Heritage has only increased in the years post independence and there are huge celebrations during Maha Shivratri. Among the twelve Jyotirlingas in the country, Somnath is usually visited first and is held extremely sacred by the Hindus.
